Transportation deaths and serious injuries are preventable.

We can make our roads and streets safer for all.

Improving safety on roadways in southwest Idaho will save lives – your life, and the lives of your children, parents, friends, and neighbors. By developing a robust, collaborative Regional Safety Action Plan (RSAP), COMPASS and its members are taking an essential step forward in improving transportation safety and saving lives across our region.

RSAP Update – Survey Results and Safety Strategies

After several months of collaborating with our partners and seeking input from the public, COMPASS is sharing an update on the development of the RSAP, including key findings from the transportation safety survey conducted in March/April 2024. Over 400 residents from the Treasure Valley participated in the survey. Seventy-one percent of respondents expressed a willingness to add a moderate to significant amount of time to their commute for safer roads, and more than 80% agreed that zero deaths or serious injuries is the correct goal for the RSAP.

Background

In early 2023, COMPASS received federal funding to create the Treasure Valley’s first Regional Safety Action Plan through a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant from the Federal Highway Administration. This grant will support COMPASS’ efforts to engage stakeholders in a collaborative, comprehensive planning endeavor to inform an actionable safety plan to improve transportation safety and save lives.

RSAP Vision

A Treasure Valley unified by a commitment to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on its roadways through innovation, collaboration, education, and engagement.

RSAP Goals

  • Design and build a transportation network that is safe for all its users.
  • Strengthen safety practices through collaboration, engagement, and education.
  • Use a data-driven approach to plan and implement proactive, innovative, and proven countermeasures.
  • Embrace the Safe System Approach and promote a culture of safety.

Outcomes

The RSAP project will produce several products to aid COMPASS member agencies in planning safer transportation systems today and in the future. These products and outcomes will include:

  • Crash Data Dashboard
    • Known as the High Injury Network, this dashboard will include an interactive map identifying conditions where crashes are most likely to occur to aid in decision-making
  • New Practices and Policy Recommendations
  • Countermeasures Toolkit
  • Implementation Plan

Public Participation

Integrating a holistic and comprehensive approach to safety will help address and mitigate risks inherent to our complex transportation systems, making a future of zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries an achievable goal.

Wide-reaching and inclusive community outreach ensures the RSAP effectively addresses safety issues.
